Sargans

Sargans is a common Suisse of the Canton of Saint-Gall, located in the District of Sarganserland.

Geography

The historical city is located at the intersection of the North-South axes railway and highway (Saint-Gall - Coire) and west-east (Zurich - Coire), with the foot of Gonzen (1380 meters of altitude).

To the east, the communal territory is limited by the the Rhine and has a common border with the Liechtenstein.

History

Mentioned for the first time in 765 in the will of Tello under the name of Senegaune , the village was the seat of the counts de Werdenberg-Sargans in XIIIe century. Its statute of city is attested as of 1337. Since XIIIe century, an imposing fortress dominates the borough. It was used as residence to the counts, then with the baillifs.

The village was destroyed by the flames with three recoveries, in 1405, 1445 and 1811.

Since 1803, Sargans belongs to the Canton of Saint-Gall.

Built between 1939 and 1944, the fortification of Sargans was an important component of the system defense known under the name of Réduit national .

Economy

The extraction of the red iron ore is attested as of IIe front century J. - C. with Gonzen. The exploitation continued until in 1966.

The locality shelters many industrial companies. Most important is the factory of textile machinery Stäubli.
