Saragossa

Saragossa (currently in Aragonese and Castilian Zaragoza , in Latin: Caesaraugusta ; in Arabic: Saraqusta , سرقسطة) is a Spanish city, capital of the province of the same name and Aragon. It counts approximately: 660895 inhabitants, it is about the fifth most populated commune of Spain.

Important a treated was signed in Saragossa (Traité of Saragossa) in 1529 between Spaniards and Portuguese for the division of discovered Nouveau World.

Saragossa is located at approximately 300 km of Madrid, at 300 kilometers of Barcelona and 350 kilometers of Valence.

History

Foundation

The site of the city is occupied by a village Celtibère or a punic station strengthened before the arrival of the Romans, under the punic name of Salduba. A Roman colony is founded of 24 before Jesus-Christ who gave him the name of Caesaraugusta . The city is then in the Roman Province of Hispanie citérieure.

The Middle Ages

In 777, Charlemagne puts the seat in front of the city, but fails to take it.

The Moslems arrive in 714: they name it Medina Albaida Saraqusta . They preserve the city until in 1118.

XXe and XXIe centuries

Juan Alberto Belloch, member of PSOE, is mayor of the city since the municipal elections of the May 25th 2003, while having beaten the outgoing mayor, Jose Atarés Martínez. It makes tandem with the president of the autonomous region of Aragón, Marcelino Iglesias, also member of the PSOE.

In December 2004, Saragossa was selected to be the city of the next International exhibition, (and nonuniversal), which will take place the summer 2008. The central theme of the Exposure will turn around water, and more than 60 countries are awaited.

From a historical and tourist point of view, it is necessary to mention the Palais of Aljafería, the basilica of Pilar, where the tradition locates an appearance of the virgin, the cathedral “Seo”, reopened there is little, the Roman walls, and the Roman theater which was also recently restored.
