Sapper

A sapper is a Soldat weapon of the genius in charge of the execution of the saps, i.e. works underground making it possible to reverse a building or even trenches. One also calls sapper the soldier of Infanterie armed with an axe which works at the head of the regiments and the soldiers charged to allow the passage of the armies through the difficult grounds and wood.
History
In France, it is Vauban which it first proposed, in 1669, the job creation of sappers and it is in 1671 qu ' they were created. The sappers belonged to the Artillerie as from 1720 until 1729. They were again built-in the artillery regiments in 1769, until 1793 when they turned over within the genius. They since are organized in 12 battalions, number reduced to 4 in 1798.
