Saosnes is a common French, located in the department of the the Sarthe and the area Pays of the Loire.

Its inhabitants is called Saugonatiennes and Saugonatiens.

History

  • Saosnes was the first capital of the " Saosnois" , thus called in reference to " Saugonna" the Gallic goddess of water.
  • It bore the name of " Sonnes" before 1801, then " Saone" and finally Saosnes.
  • In 1810, it absorbs MONT-RENAULT which counts 183 inhabitants. Of memory the old ones, the Mayors of Saosnes and Mount-Renault would have played to determine the name of the common news. Saosnes gained and Montrenault is now a locality. History or legend?

Religious heritage

  • Church Saint Hilaire (XIe, XIIIe and 19th centuries). Clock of 1900. Frescos and polychrome statues protected by small vaults. Richly decorated retable.
  • Church Julien Saint of XIe or XIIe and 19th centuries, with its bell-tower encrusted in frontage. The gate, the small openings and their Roman arches indicate the Romance style of construction.

Tourist monuments and places

  • Pond of Ford Fitted: Natural zone of Ecological, Faunistic, and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF) of Second Generation. It extends its 29 hectares on the communes of Saones and that of Mées. It is of interests ecological (insects, birds), functional (migratory zone) and also landscape.
  • One still finds the traces of the fortifications " ditches of Robert Diable".
