Saorge

Saorge (in Occitan/Royasque Saorj ) is a common French, located in the department of the the Alpes-Maritimes and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. Its inhabitants is the Saorgiens . It is close to Pigna in the Province of Imperia in Italy.

Geography

Saorge is a perched village, overhanging the throats of the Roya. The village is reached by two not connected roads. : By the East, it is necessary quiier D6204 (Via Europae) then to take the road known as of the Chestnuts. By North Is to go until Fontan and to borrow D38 to join the entr&ée principal one. In a wild site, Saorge stages its houses clutched with the steep slopes which dominate a light widening of Roya. The lanes in maze, almost always in staircase, often arched, are curious to traverse. The houses are high and include/understand up to four or five stages.

History

During the Second world war, the totality of the civil population of the village was " déportée" by the German troops of occupation until Turin (Italy) between the month of December 1944 and April 1945.

This ignored episode of the conflict in the the Alpes-Maritimes was the subject of a Report of Control of Modern history written by Goulven Godon, prepared under the direction of Jean-Louis Panicacci, supported in front of the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis in June 2004 and entitled: " The " déportation" civil populations of the valleys of the Bévéra and Roya in Italy of North (1944-1945) ".

  • Saorge is a stage, with visit of the village, the tourist train called “Train of the Wonders”. Its route goes from Nice to Tende by Breil on Roya, starting point towards the Vallée of the Wonders.
  • Saorge is an important point of the " Road of the Baroque and the historical organ of the Valley of Roya". The organ of the parish church Saint Claude Martyr of Saorge is a realization of the Lingiardi brothers in 1847. A demonstration of this exceptional instrument is organized within the framework of a lasted visit of the village 1 hour 30 with hearing. (0493.045.160)

Saorge belongs to the surface of production of the “Olive of Nice”, which is a Appellation of controlled origin.

Highway network

The Trunk road 204 passes by the throats of Saorge. A portion of this road is the subject of an installation, to avoid a section of 2,4 km sinuous and threatened by stone falls. Two new bridges and two tunnels were built. The “tunnel of Saorge” is composed of 640 m, open in June 2001 a southern tunnel, and of a tunnel northern of 360 m, brought into service in January 2005 and inaugurated the next month.
