Santo Varni
Santo Varni (Genoa, 1807 - 1885) is the one of most important sculptors Ligurians.
Biography
It starts by studying with the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, where he is pupil of Giuseppe Gaggini.It moves then in Florence. where he becomes pupil of Lorenzo Bartolini during two years, in 1836 and 1837, auprès of which he seeks the more modern forms which miss in Genoa. He works out there the methods which allow the passage of the neoclassicism the romanticism for the sculpture génoise.
In the monumental Cimetière of Staglieno its presence is considerable by more than forty work: the tomb of Bracelli Spinola (1864), the tomb of Andrea Tagliacane (1870), the tomb of De Asarta (1879).
Varni then becomes a reference for the various generations of sculptors génois who continue his teaching, of 1838, when it succeeds the vacant left station of the old Master Giuseppe Gaggini left in Turin, until 1885, where it directs the office of sculpture to the Academy Ligustica of Beautiful arts and year of his death.

He had constituted a large collection of approximately 4.000 drawings, most of the time of the artists génois and Ligurians by including a considerable number of drawings of the Casa Piola. Its posthumous sale was held at Genoa in November and December 1887, but was mainly dispersed.
