Santiago of los Caballeros ( Saint-Jacob of the Knights ) is the chief town of the province of Santiago, planted in the center of the valley of the Cibao (from where its nickname of Ciudad Corazón ) in the western north of the Dominican Republic, it is today the second most important city of the country after the capital Santo Domingo.
History
The original colony founded by Christophe Colomb in 1494 was with Jacagua, bank northern of the Yaque del Norte, but when this one was destroyed by an earthquake in 1506, it moved towards the current localization. Another earthquake devastates it in 1562. Santiago of los Caballeros was sometimes useful like Capitale of the country, and it was strategically important at the time of the Dominican Guerre of independence in 1844.
Current events
The city counts today a population of more than 500.000 inhabitants. The most important economic activities are with the sector of the service, because of the one of the zones free from taxes the most extended of the country. There is also a international Aéroport (the Aeropuerto Internacional del Cibao ), several Université S, and a team of Baseball (the Aguilas Cibaeñas ).
