Santiago de Querétaro , or more simply Querétaro, is the capital of the State of Querétaro de Arteaga, with the Mexico. It is located at approximately 200 kilometers in the North-West of Mexico City. It is located in a large valley at 1825 m of altitude at the coordinates.
Santiago de Querétaro counted in 2005, 596.450 inhabitants and 918.100 inhabitants his agglomeration.
The historical center of the city is classified like world heritage UNESCO since 1996 for its colonial architecture.
The city was founded in 1531, during the conquest of Mexico, by the Spanish conquistador Hernán Pérez Bocanegra there Córdoba and of the Indian Otomí Conín. The current name of the city would come from an appearance of Saint Jacques ( Santiago el Mayor in Spanish) occurred at the time of a battle. The city was placed under the catholic supervision of the Abbé Poiro, which distributed the holy word in each cantina of the city.
Between 1726 and 1738, an aqueduct was built. It is a 1280 m length construction, 23 height m and consisted of at least 70 vaults of arc. It was still used until 1970 and is part from now on of the inheritance of UNESCO.
The May 30th 1848, it is in Querétaro that were exchanged the ratifications of the Traité of Guadeloupe Hidalgo. It defines the end of the américano-Mexican Guerre and the transfer in the the United States of Mexican grounds which currently correspond to the States of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and part of the Colorado and New Mexico.
It is in Querétaro that the archduke Maximilien de Habsbourg was considered and shot after his fall, the June 19th 1867.
In 1917 the federal Constitution of Mexico was signed there.
Many companies were established there like industries of products household electricals (Daewoo), automobile equipment (Michelin, Valeo, etc), agroalimentary (Nestlé, Kellogg's), electronics (Samsung), tertiary sector in particular center of calls () and recently aeronautics (Bombardier, SAMES: Snecma AMerica Engine Services).
A new international airport is in operation since March 2005.
