Santander one of the 32 departments of the Colombia, is located in the North-East of the country in the Andean area. Its capital is Bucaramanga. It is bordered in north by the departments of Norte of Santander, Cesar and Bolívar, in the west by Antioquia and the south by Boyacá.
The name of the department comes from the hero of the independence of the News-Grenade Francisco of Paula Santander. The festival of the department takes place on May 13rd of each year, in remembering the law of May 13rd, 1857, which created the State of Santander.
The department is formed by 87 municipalities gathered in six provinces.
History
The department of Santander east undoubtedly one of the areas of Colombia whose history is richest. When came the Spanish Conquistador S, the area was inhabited by various people, in particular the people Guane. Later, the Spaniards mixed and formed a new race which with time was artisane Révolution of Comuneros, beginning of the national independence of the Spanish domination.
