The name of the district is a homage to the antique Sesmaria de Santa' Anna, zone that Jerônimo de Ornellas occupied when it settled in Porto Alegre. Later, as from the 18th century, the district belonged to Arraial (Hameau) of São Miguel, territory crossed by Arroio (Ruisseau) C Sabão. From its frequent innondations, the site did not attract large world. Only lived in this place the poor black families which, during years, cohabited in the insalubrity caused by excesses of the river.

The denomination of Santana was allotted only in 1885, and the development of the district started only after the Guerre of Farrapos when, in 1865, the governor of the province of the time, Visconde da Boa Vista, made open a public highway bearing its name which allowed the installation of Prado (Hippodrome) da Boa Vista and which developed the place and contributed to the installation again resident. Later, Prado yielded to the place to the futebol Sport Club Americano former football team which was champion of the city for a long time.

After the construction of a bridge of access at the end of the 19th century, the occupation of the district was accentuated. The exchanges with the other parts of the cities benefitted the population, through the development of the lines of urban transport of the Company Bondes Carris .

On the cultural level, Santana was at the origin of the great festivals of Carnaval organized by its black inhabitants and, during the Années 1960, 70 and 80, emerged from the schools of samba such as the Bambas da Orgia , Acadêmicos da Orgia and Praiana , and of the groups of carnival like the Tapuias .
