Santa Maria della Scala

L' Hôpital Santa Maria della Scala is a religious building with His and the oldest hospital of Europe.

History

Built at the 13th century, and located opposite the cathedral known as Duomo at His, opposite flown steps there driving (from where probably its name), this building includes/understands many oratories under the level of the place, of which that devoted to Sainte Catherine of the night.

The big room (the old infirmary) revealed many frescos after a recent restoration which eliminated bleaching recovering the walls and the vaults.

The church Santa Maria della Scala, renovated in 1446, was included as of the construction of the hospital. It is on the same level as the big room.

In 1995, the other churches of the Santissima Annunziata E Al Pellegrinaio , were gradually restored and were opened, the old sacristy with its paintings of Lorenzo Vecchietta, the vault del Manto with the fresco of Domenico Beccafumi, the Cappella beyond Madonna , the medieval hayloft, the buildings of the Compagnia di Santa Caterina della Notte , those of the historical seat of the Società di Esecutori di Pie Disposizioni'.

In these underground levels, is there also the Museum Archaeological National, the exposures of the Squarcialupi Palate, and a permanent exposure comprising the original sculptures of the Gaia fountain of Jacopo della Quercia,
