The Church Santa Maria Novella , the first basilica of Florence, is located on the place Santa Maria Novella.

History

Built at the 13th century by the Dominican , it replaces the oratorical Santa Maria delle Vigne , built on the same site as of the 9th century (from where its qualifier of Novella ).

At the beginning of the 14th century, the convent Santa Maria Novella is:

one of the centers of the life florentine. Hearth of intellectual life, the convent is a true university, declared recently general studium… The convent is also a center of famous preaching… Inside the convent they are permanent exchanges between the Brothers theologists, lawyers, philosophers, artists, preachers, former missionaries, all profit from competences and information of their fellow-members | J. - M. The thought of Remi of Florence diffused inside the convent also undoubtedly radiated on the city. Dante Alighieri, friend of the convent of Santa Maria Novella, profited from the theological culture which was diffused there, and it is admitted that it would have followed certain courses of Remi.

Remi was buried in Santa Maria Novella and its portrait is painted with fresco in the large cloister.

Works

The church owes in particular its celebrity with fabulous the Fresque S which it has: Giotto, Brunelleschi, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Benedetto da Maiano, Masaccio, Domenico Ghirlandaio for its fresco in the Vault Tornabuoni, Filippino Lippi, Andrea Orcagna for its Retable of the Vault Strozzi, and in the cloister, the frescos and Greyness S of Paolo Uccello.

The frontage rebirth of the building, out of marbles white and black, started in 1300, is finished by Leone Battista Alberti, in 1470.

Beside the church a cemetery is in which rest number of noble florentins which financed the building.
