Santa Magdalena de Pulpis

Santa Magdalena de Pulpis (Castilian name , Santa Magdalena de Polpis , Valencian name ) is a common to the north of the Valencian community in Spain. It belongs to the Province of Castellón and more precisely to the Comarque of the Baix Maestrat ( Bajo Maeztrazgo in Castillan).

Geography

Santa Magdalena de Pulpis is located on the buttresses of the Sierra of Irta, in the Eastern sector of the comarque one. One reaches it since Castellón by taking N-340 or the AP-7.

Santa Magdalena de Pulpis is close to the localities of Cervera del Maestre, Peñíscola, Alcalá de Chivert and Salsadella all in the Province of Castellón.

History

The first zone of occupation was the castle of Polpís - of which there remains only part of the tower of the Homenaje , the principal door and some sides of walls and a small hamlet located at the foot of the castle. In January 1190, Santa Magdalena de Pulpis was given by Alphonse II of Aragon to the templiers, whereas it was still with the capacity of the Moslems. Conquered in 1233 by the Master of the Temple, it accepted a charter of settlement in February 1287, according to the habits (fuero) of Valence. It belonged then to the Ordre of Montesa, which succeeded that of the Temple, in the Crown of Aragón; Polpís belonged to the commandery of Alcalá de Chivert. The small enclave of Polpís had 30 houses in 1329, and in 1845 it had 160 of them.

Economy

Based traditionally on agriculture (culture of the almond trees, caroubiers and olive-trees, on the dry grounds, and gardening on the irrigated grounds.

  • Ayuntamiento (town hall).
  • Parish church , of the XIXe century and dedicated to Santa Magdalena.
  • Hermitage Sant Vicent , goal of a pilgrimage Monday following the Easter Monday.
