Santa Eulària of Riu

Santa Eulària of Riu (Catalan name , Santa Eulalia del Río , Castilian name ) is a common of the autonomous community Spanish of the Balearic Islands as well as an important tourist center of the island of Ibiza.

History

At the time Moslem woman, the zone was called Xarc . At the time of the Catalan conquest, one modified the division of the island in cuartos (quarters) similar to the current municipal organization. The cuarto of Santa Eulalia returned in Infant Pierre of Portugal, feudal lord of Guillermo de Montgrí, bishop of Tarragone, which had the royal rights of conquest. The king Jacques the Conqueror acquired the rights of Pierre of Portugal, pasando; The cuarto of Santa Eulalia became Cuarto del Rey . The name of Santa Eulalia comes from the church which one immediately built after the conquest.

To 19th and 20th century, this poor commune provided many immigrants who settled and will make stock in French Algeria. At the time of the civil war, many republicans also exiled themselves in Algeria.

However, the ibicencos do not have really very a good memory of this time hippie: it should be said that these young people were not dépensiés and lived in community… Thereafter starting from end of the year 70 the real estate speculation explodes and is accompanied by an aggressive urbanization in seaside.
