Santa Catarina

The State of Santa Catarina is a State south of the Brésil; its capital is Florianópolis. It is located between the State of the Rio Grande C Sul at the south and the State of Paraná at north. In the west, it divides a border with the Argentine. Its name comes from the island éponyme.

History

The State was created with the arrival of the Spanish on the island of Santa Catarina in 1542. The Portuguese took control in of it 1675. The colony of Santa Catarina was established in 1738. The area knew several waves of immigration coming from the Europe, mainly from the Germany (as from the 19th century) but also from the Italy, the Poland and the Russia, and, since the Années 1950, from the Japan.

In March 2004, the State was struck by the first hurricane recorded in the Atlantic Ocean southern. Since there is no name to indicate such an event, the Brazilian Météorologue S called it Catarina, according to the name of the State.

Relief and climate

The relief of the State is very contrasted, the littoral is made of coastal plains, small bays and of islands, on the other hand, the interior of the grounds is a mountainous region whose altitude can reach 1  800 Mr. Cela reflects himself on the climate, the coasts are under a wet hot climate moderate (fairly hot (18 °C and wet) whereas in the mountainous regions, the mountain Climat is essential with winters bringing snow and cold. It is the State of the coldest Brazil besides.

The hydrography of the area is very complex, they are multiple rivers which are articulated around the river Itajaí in the sector of the littoral, whereas the area of the plates is crossed by the river Uruguay and its affluents.

Economy

The economy of the State is based on the Agriculture and the Industrie.

Agriculture is made up of the breeding, the culture of the Blé with the breeding Porcin, the breeding Lait ier, the culture of the Soja, of Fruit S, the Riz and other traditional cultures like the Fumaison, the Haricot, the Oignon, the Potato. This agriculture occupies 25% of the surface of the State.

Local industry is dominated by the metallurgical production, Mécanique, electric but also by the Textile. More recently, there was creation in the sectors such as the Plasturgie and the Informatique.

On the level of the mine S, very present also, the extraction of the coal premium to feed the thermal power station .

The forest reserves of the mountainous solid masses which started to become exhausted because of their old overexploitation led to an afforestation, a better control and a modernization of industries of the Papier and Cellulose like with a revival of the industry of the Meuble.

Tourism has also an influence on the economy with the 26 beaches out of 560 km of coasts which are attended by the Argentinian tourists , Uruguyan and Paraguayan. Half of the 1,5 million Argentinian tourists who came to Brazil, went in this State.
