Sangatte
Sangatte is a common French, located in the department of the Pas-de-Calais and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Geography
History
It is particularly known to be with the one of the ends of the Channel tunnel. It is also a crossing point of migrants wanting to go to the the United Kingdom. A reception center of refugees of the Croix-Rouge was drawn up there in a hangar, but this one does not exist any more: in November 2002, Nicolas Sarkozy, then Minister of Interior Department, ordered its closing.
Blériot Beach
- the July 25th 1909, Louis Blériot is the first to cross the English Channel, while taking off with the rising of the sun, condition required by the Daily Mail (British newspaper) which is at the origin of the challenge and will give to him the sum of 25.000 gold francs concerned. The crossing will be carried out in 37 minutes, connecting Barraques, close to Calais, and Dover, with the orders of Blériot XI which it conceived in collaboration with Raymond Saulnier, been driven by an engine 3 cylinders developing 25 horses
