Sandanski

Sandanski (in Bulgarian: bg Сандански), in the past Sveti Vratch (bg СветиВрач), is a city of the south-west of the Bulgaria, in the district of Blagoevgrad. Its population counts: 30196 inhabitants (9/13/2005).

Geography

Sandanski is a city of the south-west of the Bulgaria, in the district of Blagoevgrad. It is located on the river Strouma and at the foot of the mountain Pirin.

The city at the average annual temperature (13,6 °C) softest of Bulgaria and it profits from a sunning from: 2506 hours per annum because the area benefits from the influences come from the Aegean Sea.

History

The initial village was founded around the hot mineral springs during the second millenium before J.C.

The locality would be the town of birth of the famous gladiator Spartacus.

The locality was, until, one of the évêchés first of this part of the Balkans. She knew her most prosperous time of, before she is destroyed at the end of by cruel tribes. The old name of the city - Sveti Vratch (Saint-Vratch = Saint-Healer) - goes up at that time: it was given in the honor of two brothers - Kozma and Damian - which cured the people.

The old city was located at the site of the current downtown area.

The old name of the city - Sveti Vratch - was replaced by that of Sandanski, in 1947, in the honor of the Bulgarian revolutionist Iané Sandanski.

Culture and tourism

The locality is known since the Antiquité for its sources of warm water.
