Synopsis
The novel is centered on the female character Temple Drake, jene girl of good family which escapes one evening from her college with a drunk young man; their car runs aground near an old dilapidated house transformed into coffee held by a couple of blacks. Several characters at the edge of intoxication enter then in scene. Temple will be violated by enigmatic Popeye and a murder will be made.On the forfeiture of the young Temple which fails in a brothel of Memphis, the police investigation is superimposed. But as André Malraux in the foreword shows it very well, the detective novel is finally secondary since the reader knows already the assassin. What counts, it is finally the description of the forfeiture of the characters and the progressive irruption of the evil: the protagonists seem to be the toy of the fate (from where sentence of Malraux celebrates it: " It is the irruption of the Greek tragedy in the novel policier").
Faulkner puts in scene lawyer, appears of the good wanting to make triumph the truth, incarnation of the fight against fate. But the pessimism of work is such as anybody will not come out from it unscathed.
