He pushed back an offensive carried out by the sultan of the Morocco and the emir of Grenade.
In 1275, with died of his/her older brother Ferdinand of Cerda, which left two male heirs in low age - Alphonse, age 4 years, and Ferdinand, age of some mois -, it benefits from the absence of his father Alphonse X, left for Germany to be made recognize king of the Romans, to join together the Cortes with Segovia and to be made recognize heir, instead of the elder one of its nephews, with the contempt of the law of primogeniture (with male preference with equal degree) which regulated usually the succession of the crown of Castille.
