Presentation

Trained at the court of his uncle the king Sanche III of Navarre, it solved to remake at least moral unit of all the Gascogne, by associating Count S and Vicomte S of the oriental party with common works. But this will came well too late: indeed, as of the previous century, in this oriental party, from new counties - those of Armagnac, Aure, Pardiac - had been detached from the old counties - those of Astarac and Fezensac; the Western part it had also known important a phase of parcelling out by the creation of many Viscounts inside the counties: Viscounts of Montaner and Lavedan in the county of Bigorre; Viscounts of Béarn, Oloron, Marsan, Dax, Tartas, Maremne in the county of Gascogne…

During the reign of Sanche, the importance of the Moors in this unit, already significant under Guillaume Sanche, still increased, and Saint-Sever affirmed its role of true capital: it is there that the count holds several assemblies of his vassal, and it is in the palate raised on the headland of Morlanne that it makes write and marks of his signature his will.
