San Salvador de Valdediós

The church of San Salvador de Valdediós , familiarly called “ El Conventín ”,

It is in the valley of Valdediós, to 7 km in the south of Villaviciosa and to 40 km of Oviedo in the Asturies. In a small valley a small church asturienne obsolete and charming pace and a monastery are joined together. The place was known in the past under the name of Boides, Boiges or Boigies.

It is a monument representative of the architecture asturienne post Ramiro Ier, and which announces already the Romance style.

History

According to the Chronicle of Albelda , written in years 881, it is mentioned an intense activity of the king Alphonse III in his grounds of Asturies: “… this prince restores all the churches of the Lord, as well as the cities and the royal palaces which rise in Oviedo. ”

There is no certainty when this church was set up. Construction is allotted to the king Alphonse III the Large one, king of Asturies, (866 - 910), which is sure it is that one allots to this king the gallery porch leant tardily with the church and some details of ornament.

On the other hand there is no doubt concerning the date of the dedication carried out under its reign, it is engraved in a block of marble in which it is noted “SUB ERA DCCCCXXX”, year 930 of the era of Idace saint or Hispanic era, into force in Spain, corresponding to year 893 of J. - C.

A solemn act, mentions that the Rosendo bishops of Mondoñedo, Nausto of Coïmbre, Sisenando of Iria-Flavia, Ranulfo of Astorga, Argimiro of Lamego, Recaredo of Lugo and Eleca of Saragossa attended the dedication, according to this same concise inscription it take place on September 16th, 893 of J. - C.

Structure

The plan answers the diagram basilical with three naves, the broadest power station, being consisted four barrel vaults, and being completed by rectangular apsidal chapels. It does not have a transept, only two additional dependences, one of each with dimensions, which can give an erroneous impression.

On the frontage of the central nave there exists a narthex or hall, leant two spaces which correspond to the two side aisles. On this unit there exists a platform which one reaches by an interior staircase.

Resting against the southern wall of the church one built later a porch which announces the galleries which during the Romance time proliferated in the churches Castilians. By this gallery one reaches inside the church by his southernmost door.

The church.

The three naves are covered by barrel vaults curved which rest on the buttresses of the external walls and the two arches which separate the naves longitudinally. They are formed by curved arcs which rest on pillars of square section. The side porch has also a barrel vault, but this case reinforced by arcs.

The capitals are decorated with vegetable matters some with califale influences.

Frescos in which one finds influences Mozarabe S. In the side walls the frescos represent octagones and rhombuses, like those of San Julián of los Prados, with representations of human figures. It there also of the frescos with reasons for the tradition paléochrétienne.

The apses in the same way are arched with a height lower than that of the respective nave. The central apse is devoted to the Saver (El Salvador), and the side apses are devoted Saint Jacques and Saint Jean Baptiste.

Outside

Outside the order compositionnel of construction is reflected: the central nave is higher than the side aisles. The buttresses are well marked in the northern wall and the Western frontage separating the naves. Prolongation of the apse of the principal nave on the side apses.

The great number of windows to provide an adequate illumination to all spaces: there are the simple ones of only one arc, the windows with confined geminated arcs wisigothic framed by a alfiz, and a window with triple arcade in the central apse.
