During Spanish colonization the town of San Salvador de Jujuy constituted a big step on the road of Potosí in Bolivia, towards the wearing of Buenos Aires. This road was borrowed by the convoys which drained the money of the mines of Potosi in the High-Peru of the time (current Bolivia) towards Spain. Let us note that money says Plata in Spanish from where the name of Río of Plata given to the river bathing the Argentinian capital because it is there that the port of shipment of the money was located.

This road crossed all the province of Jujuy. It still exists. It starts of Potosí in Bolivia, country which it leaves after the locality of Villarzon. It enters in Argentinian territory (province of Jujuy) by the town of Quiaca, then crosses Abra Pampa, engages in Quebrada, crosses Humahuaca, Tilcara, Tumbaya, Volcán and arrives then at Jujuy from where it continues towards Tucuman and Buenos Aires. It was doubled of a way of railroad currently connecting La Paz and Buenos Aires and borrowing it also the North-South furrow of the Quebrada de Humahuaca.
