San Salvador is an island of the archipelago of the the Bahamas, also called Colombus Island or Watling Island .

History

Called Ghanahani by the Amerindians Tainos who populated it, the island was discovered by Christophe Colomb on October 12th 1492. It is the first ground of Americas which it approached. It named it San Salvador (or French Saint-Saver).

The Indian population was decimated in less than one century, of disease or control.

Later, the island was used as den with an English pirate George Watling which left him its name. In 1925, it was re-elected in San Salvador of the Bahamas even if certain historians dispute that it is well the island mentioned by Christophe Colomb.

During the Second world war, American installed there an air base which was used to them thereafter as center of test for missiles. This abandoned base constitutes from now on the airport of the island.

The island suffered from the Ouragan Floyd in 1999.

Geography

The island is the island located more at the East of the archipelago of the Bahamas. It is in fact the emerged part of an underwater mountain of 4500 bills of quantities. Girdled by a coral reef. Long 19 km and broad 8 km, for a surface of 169 km ², it does not present relief and its central part is made up of several lakes connected to each other.

The island counts approximately 1000 inhabitants living tourism primarily. A Club the Mediterranean is installed on the island since ten year.

Several remarkable sites of diving cash among most beautiful of the Bahamas.

San Salvador is one of the 32 districts of the the Bahamas. It carries number 26 on the chart.
