San Pedro Sula

San Pedro Sula is a city and municipality of the North-West of the Honduras. With a population of 486.000 inhabitants (estimate 2002), it is the second plus big city of the country after the capital Tegucigalpa. It is the capital of the Département of the Cortes. It will become the Plateforme of correspondence (hub) for the Latin America of the company Iberia (2004).

History

San Pedro Sula was founded in 1536 by Pedro de Alvarado under the name of Villa of San Pedro de Puerto Caballos . Its current name appeared five years later, because of its localization in the valley of Sula. It was a small city of province until the arrival of the railroad on the Caribbean Sea in 1888. Starting from this date, the city quickly grew bigger.

The May 27th 2004, a fire in the prison causes the death of 104 people.

Economy

The industry of the cigar is the main activity. There is also an international airport (Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport or Mesa International Airport or Mesa code IATA: SAP , ICAO: MHLM).
