San Lazzaro degli Armeni

San Lazzaro degli Armeni (in Armenian: ՍուրբՂազարոսԿղզի ( island Saint Lazare ); in French: Saint Lazare of the Armenians) is an island of the Lagune of Venice. It is to a hundred meters in the west of the island of the Lido.

It is entirely occupied by a monastery, sits of the Congrégation of the fathers mekhitarists.

History

At the 12th century, monks occupy the island and build there a Léproserie, one of the first in the world.

In 1717, the island then abandoned since the 16th century was offered by the sérenissime republic to a Armenian monk , the father Mékhitar, fleeing the Turkish persécussion with Istambul. Helped several monks, Mékhitar restores the church of XIIe century and, around, founds a monastery there. In 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte incorporates Venice in its new Italian kingdom. Taking note of the scientific and literary work practiced within the monastery, it decides to leave him a total independence. The manuscript signed by the emperor is kept today with the monastery.

For this time, the island has been several times increased and reached today four times its size initial and makes three hectares.

Geography and situation

The island is located in the lagoon of Venice, with 3 kilometers in the south-east of the Place Saint-Marc and with 200 meters in the west of the island of the Lido. The single means of access to the island and the boat and in particular the line number 20 of the Vaporetto which connects the Saint-Marc place to the island of San Servolo then Saint-Lazarre.

The monastery

The monastery is inhabited today permanently by ten people (cleaned, guard and gardener). Contrary to the majority of the catholic monasteries, the priests mekhitarists do not dedicate to them existance with the agricultural or manual work, but with the professional work and scientific.

The museum of the monastery proposes thousands of works of which old statues, weapons, tables and writings. The Mummy Egyptian of Mekhmeket going back to 4000 av. J. - C. and its Sarcophage are the nail of the exposure.

The library shelters 200.000 volumes of which some of the very first bibles, the first Cartoons and paperbacks, as well as old manuscripts Arab S, Indian S or Egyptians. Some of these manuscripts were lent to the Musée of Louvre in February 2006 for the exposure Armenia Sacra within the framework of the year of Arménie in France.
