San Juan is the capital of the province of San Juan. It is located in the valley of Tulum, in the west of the Río San Juan. Its average altitude is of 650 meters. It has a good infrastructure of residences and transport.

According to the census of 2001, the municipe had a population of 115.556 inhabitants. But the city is also the center of an urban center, the " Gran San Juan". This one counted 421.640 living (INDEC, 2001), that is to say 18,9% of more than the 354.760 inhabitants listed before in 1991. These figures place the city in the tenth place among the Argentinas cities.
