San Jose is the fifth agglomeration of California and the chief town of the county of Santa Clara, with the the United States of America. Located at the southern end of the Bay of San Francisco, it is more the big city of the urban Région of San Francisco and the “Capital of the Silicon Valley”; one estimated his population at: 929936 inhabitants at July 2006, which makes it tenth city of the United States of it.

History

Discovered site

The first inhabitants of the area are the Amerindian S Ohlone. The first European permanent colony of California and the area of San Jose is founded by the Spanish in 1769 with the Presidio de Monterey and the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, established by the father Junípero Serra. On the orders of Antonio María de Bucareli there Ursúa, viceroy of News-Spain, San Jose are founded under the name of Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe (in the honor of Joseph) the November 29th 1777 with an aim of founding an agricultural community. It is about the first civil community in Alta California.

The Spanish pueblo

El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe (the village of Saint Joseph de Guadalupe) is founded the November 29th 1777. It is the first Spanish colony which is neither a mission nor a military outpost built in Alta California. The pueblo quickly becomes an agricultural community whose productions feed the présidios of San Francisco and Monterey. In 1778, its population is of 68 inhabitants. Into 1797, it changes place, and settles where is currently Plaza de César Chávez.

Geography

Climate

San Jose, as the remainder of the area, enjoys a Mediterranean Climat moderated by the presence of the Baie of San Francisco. However, contrary to San Francisco, it is protected on three sides by mountains and is located inside the grounds. This situation protects it from the rain and the omnipresent Brouillard of San Francisco.

Natural risks

San Jose is located close to the Faille of San Andreas and is thus exposed to the seismic activity. The most important seism having touched the city took place in 1906 and destroyed many buildings of the city (it is the Earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco). One listed in San Jose of the seisms in 1839, 1851, 1858, 1864, 1865, 1868, 1891, 1957 (the Daly City Earthquake ) and in 1989 (the Earthquake of Loma Prieta). San Jose is also near the Faille of Hayward, of the Fault of Vista and of those of Northern Calaveras and Central Calaveras Goes up.

Local government

San Jose is directed by a Gouvernement with municipal management. The current mayor is Chuck Reed. The municipal council is composed of ten members elected by district, and of a mayor elected by a total election. The mayor chairs the councils, does not have the right to veto and is elected for four years like the advisers, mandate renewable only once. The council elects a vice-mayor among the advisers during the second meeting of the year following the municipal election. This adviser has the capacities of the Maire in the event of temporary absence, but cannot succeed to him as a mayor in the event of vacancy of the station.

The municipal Gérant directs the administration of the city, it is named by the mayor and elected official by the municipal council for one indefinite period. It has as a role to present the annual budget to the council which only can approve it. The current municipal manager by interim is White.

Transport

The area of San Jose has an important network of highways to which belongbelong three Interstate highway S, the 280, 880 and Interstate 680; in addition to many major roads federal or managed by the state, of which the roads US 101, CA-85, CA-87, CA-17 and CA-237. San Jose is also served by the way-express train of the county of Santa Clara, of which the Almaden Expressway, Capitol Expressway, San Tomas Expressway, and Lawrence Expressway.

The level of the rail traffic, Amtrak makes it possible to join Sacramento by the way Capitol Corridor , and either Seattle, or Los Angeles, by the Coast Starlight . Caltrain provides suburban lines between San Francisco and Gilroy, Altamont Commuter Express train (ACE) makes it possible to join Stockton while passing by the communities of the east of Bay. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) manages a network of Tramway which binds San Jose to the centers of the towns of Mountain View, Milpitas, Campbell and Almaden Valley. VTA also manages many lines of bus in the municipality and its neighborhoods.

At the airport level, the city is served by the International airport of San Jose, located at approximately 3 km in the North-West of the downtown area and by the Reid-Hillview Airport off Santa Clara County . Nevertheless the inhabitants use also the International airport of San Francisco, a Plate-forme of correspondence located at 56 km in the North-West, and the International airport of Oakland, to 56 km in north.
