San Ignacio de Velasco

San Ignacio de Velasco is a city of the Département of Santa Cruz in Bolivia. It is the chief town of the Province of Jose Miguel de Velasco.

Situation

It is built at an altitude of 410  meters. Its average temperature is of 25 ºC. It is with 476 kilometers of Santa Cruz of the Sierra on a picturesque hill, with the sources of the Río Paraguá, affluent of the Río Guaporé (or Río Iténez ).

Population

Its population was of 23.569 inhabitants (2005).

The municipe of San Ignacio de Velasco has as for him 46.000 inhabitants, which does of them one of the most important municipes of the Département of Santa Cruz.

After the town of Santa Cruz and the Province of Germán Busch, San Ignacio de Velasco with the more demographic strong growth of the department.

Activities

The city became a tourist center. It is principal home base for the exploration of the National park No5el Kempff Mercado which attracts many ecotourists.

The city is the seat of the apostolic Vicariat of Chiquitos , with jurisdiction on provinces of Velasco, Chiquitos, Angel Sandoval and Germán Busch.
