San (Greek letter)

The letter san (traced ; the tiny was recreated because the old Greek texts were written in capitals), in Greek σάν or άν , is a old letter of the Greek alphabet. It should not be confused with driven , another Greek letter.
It is probably resulting from a letter phenician, named tsade , and it was placed in the first versions of the Alphabet between pi (Π in capital) and Qoppa (Ϙ in capital). However, if the Greeks adopted the letter, the sound for which it was intended, ṣ (a /s/ Emphatique), was not useful for them; in old Greek, it was to probably have a sonority close to /s/.
It may be even that san inspired the letter Sigma (Σ), which gradually replaced it in the texts.
