Samurai deeper Kyo

Samurai Deeper Kyo (original title: SAMURAI DEEPER KYO ) is a Manga written by Akimine Kamijyō which counts 38 volumes. In France it is published with the editions Kana, in the collection Dark Kana. Into October 2007, 35 volumes are translated into French.

The manga was adapted in 2002 in animated series of twenty-six episodes by the Studio Deen. This adaptation takes a great number of freedoms with the original manga.

The history is at the time of medieval Japan (a little after the Bataille Sekigahara 1600).

Synopsis

A young pharmacist, Kyoshiro Mibu, meets an young woman who known as asthmatic and wishes to look after it. But this woman proves to be in fact Yuya Shiina, famous chasseuse of premium " that which is everywhere on the road of tokai". She believes to have recognized in Kyoshiro the portrait of the large murderer Kyo with the eyes of demon, the man with the 1.000 victims…

Characters and principal screen

With the first access, this history is of the type Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde: Kyo the bloodthirsty man remaking surface during periods of tension whereas Kyoshiro is peaceful and with the rather inoffensive air. But with the wire of the adventure one learns that Kyo and Kyoshiro are in fact two people with in the beginning two bodies quite distinct, and that Kyo was imprisoned in the body of Kyoshiro by this one so that Kyo does not commit any more a crime. The guiding line of the manga is thus the search for its body, hidden some share. With this intention, it will cross a great number of people and some will become his/her friends, others not. Former companions of Kyo are astonished by this behavior because they had known it solitary and egoistic, and to thus see it protecting from other people appears to them to be a sign of weakness for some but for other that is an advantage. But the true force isn't it that which makes it possible to succeed in protecting its close relations?

Samurai Deeper Kyo is thus held in Japan of the beginning of the era of the Shogunat of the Tokugawa. flashbacks during the course of the history point out historical facts the such Bataille of Sekigahara. The historical aspect does not stop there because the major part of the protagonists is based on characters having really existed such Ieyasu Tokugawa, Hidetada Tokugawa, Nobunaga Oda…

Weapons

During the various combat, a multitude of weapons is used by the characters. Some are common whereas others are magic in the direction where they choose which will be able to handle them and this permanently, so that it is possible that it fights some quite simply refuses to continue an attack if the heart of its carrier changes. These weapons all were manufactured by only one man named Muramasa and one calls them the muramasa. These weapons are the only ones with being able to wound the ex- red King, the chief of the Mibu clan.

Engagements

Combat of the first volumes not using that the art of the handling of the saber left room to attacks little by little combining the physical and mental forces. Although the engagements remain with the body with body, the protagonists use techniques allowing them to improve their potential of combat (endurance, force…). Each combatant has his own techniques.

Similarities with RPG

So we can deduce from it that this manga strongly resembles a RPG, or roleplay. Indeed, the characters progressively become increasingly powerful of their voyage, as if they assembled level and gained experiment with each combat.

The fact that they can use techniques improving their potential of combat is similar to the fates and techniques of " soutien" of RPG.

The presence of attacks not being able to be used that a certain number of times before being exhausted strongly point out PP or EP (Not of Being able/Point of Spirit) of the great classics. In addition, it should be waited one day so that they can be used again, which points out the famous inns (" INN") of RPG allowing to regain PP.

Certain attacks, like " The Breath of Vampire" aspire the vital energy of the enemies in order to give again some with the attacker, recurring things in RPG.

Lastly, the attacks fusions (or combined) of the characters are not without pointing out those of Japanese RPG.

To finish some with these similarities, the group of hero is made up very exactly like that of a RPG: Kyo is the character with balanced competences, Yuya (and later, Akari) is the healer of the group, Bontenmaru is Berserker, while Akira and Luciole can be regarded as the " magiciens" , the first handling the Ice and the second Fire.

One notes also the presence of boss at the end of the visited places (Nobunaga for example), and of under-boss (crowned generals).

The majority of the characters are samurais and the manga describes us part of their world. As very good combatant they seek novel methods of combat unceasingly. Some thanks to their force, serve the good by defending the weak ones, wanting to fight only against experts whereas others prefer to use their science at not very creditable ends as for example to involve itself to control a novel method on the innocent ones without weapons or to make reign terror on villagers without defense.

It is also learned there that, goods or bad, they only live to fight and always fight while smiling as to mislead death whereas one of the duellists unrelentingly is killed or seriously wounded during the confrontation.

Animates

Animates is composed of twenty-six episodes diffused in 2002 with the Japan. The principal difference between the version paper and animates it is in the transformation of the enemies into monsters. Indeed takes again the majority of the characters of the manga put aside the fact animates it that during their combat, the “malicious ones” transform into gigantic monsters called Kenyo .

There is appearance of a new character as well as fifth muramasa carried by this one, but which is this time Ci a kind of Gatling that it carries at the end of the arm, and which functions thanks to its internal energy and not like a knife.

The adaptation takes again only the first volumes of the manga.
