Biography

Born in a family from the black middle-class of Harlem of a father who was owner of a funeral parlor, he marries at the eighteen years age the poetess Marilyn Hacker, which has the same age. They have a girl and divorce in 1979. In its Autobiographie of 1988, The Motion off Light in Toilets , Delany does not hide that he prefers the sexual relationships with the men. Hacker and are to him from now on known like homosexual militants .

It publishes its first novel at the twenty years age and obtains several literary rewards quickly: the Price Nebula during two consecutive years, in 1966 for Babel 17 and in 1967 for the Intersection Einstein ; the price Hugo in 1970 for one of its news, the time considered as a semi-precious stone propeller . It is then unanimously presented like one of the best hopes of the new American science fiction. It pays homage to authors like Theodore Sturgeon and Robert Heinlein.

It is diverted nevertheless little by little science fiction to be devoted to a university career. He teaches the writing with young authors, from which Vonda McIntyre will leave. He still publishes some minor works, in particular an incursion into the field of pornographic science fiction in 1973 with Vice-versa , which is for him the occasion to affirm its bisexuality.

He achieves his return in 1975 with Dhalgren , which reconsiders its obsessions (representations of the Sadomasochisme, Pédophilie) and shows the result of its formal research. Return confirmed with Triton then Stars in my Pocket like Grains off Sand (1984). It continues in parallel a cycle of Fantasy, Nevèrÿon (1979-1987). He says himself then nearer to authors like Joanna Russ or Ursula Guin.

Since 1977, it publishes tests on the science fiction, like The Jewel-Hinged Jaw , and several collections of articles on the Paralittérature or the queer studies. It becomes titular of a pulpit of comparative literature with the university of Massachusetts in 1988. Since 2001, he teaches with the Temple University of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania).
