Samudragupta
Samudragupta - also called Sarvarâjochheda - is a Râja Gupta of the Magadha (335 - 380).
Samudragupta succeeds in 335 his/her father Chandragupta, founder of the empire Gupta. It conducts campaigns towards the plains of North, demolishing the Kushâna Mathurâ, then towards the south and the west, imposing its suzerainty on Rajputana, current the the Rajasthan, the Panjâb, the Cachemire, the Bengal, the Assam, the Nepal… the empire is organized as a federation of kingdoms which remain independent in their interior administration. An inscription indicates that it overcomes nine kings before annexing their kingdoms. It subjects the tribes of the Rajasthan and in the Eastern Dekkan, the overcome kings recognize it as suzerain (perhaps gone down until Kânchîpuram, it affirms to have overcome the king Pallava Visnugopa, but can crown this victory by no other success in the South of the Narmadâ). Its principal military effort is dedicated against the Saces which have controlled for two centuries the Goujerat and the Mâlvâ. The result is dubious and it is not excluded that it was overcome.
Samudragupta is a sovereign good and right. It reforms the currency (gold and copper), rests on the Hindouisme, avoids the wars with the profit of the diplomacy. It is also a well-read man and a musician.
According to a Chinese historian, the king of Ceylon Meghavanna would have sent an embassy and gifts to the court of Samudragupta. He obtains from the king the authorization to build a Buddhist monastery close to Bodhgayâ.
The radiation of the Gupta empire extends on all the peninsula. The Indo-China and the Indonesia are completely hindouisées and the spiritual influence of India reaches the China and the Japan.
Gupta are orthodoxe Hindou S of obedience Vishnou ïte, which does not prevent them from being benevolent with regard to the Bouddhisme. They attempt to make survive the solemn sacrifices vedic. Quantity of documents indicate that Samudragupta would have practiced the Ashvamedha to celebrate its victories, striking on this occasion a gold currency appearing a horse near a furnace bridge. All these conditions support a blooming of arts and letters without precedent. The imperial court protects the poets, the philosophers and the artists, going until organizing true literary tournaments.
