Samsagace (known as Sam) Gamegie (III April 6th, 2983 - IV 61) is a character created by J.R.R. Tolkien in the Lord of the Rings . He belongs to the race of the Hobbit S (more exactly one of “Foot-Hairy”), named Semi-Men by the other human ones.

He is the gardener of Frodon Sacquet and his close friend. It is the son of “Old”, sizeable Hobbit. Surprised by Gandalf to be listened under the window of Frodon, it is charged to accompany it until Imladris. Sam will be the most faithful companion of Frodon, going with him until the end of his adventure.

He is resulting from a family including/understanding 7 children (Anson, Hamson, Halfred, Paquette, May, Samsagace and Marguerite) who were born from the union of Hamfast Gamegie and of Bell Bonenfant. He married Pink Cotton and had 13 children of her (Elanor, Frodon, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Daisy, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin and Tolman). Sam founded the line of Gardner (name which his/her children took). He became mayor of the County during the Fourth Age until IV 61.

The role of Sam is paramount in the Lord of the Rings: it is him which often gives Frodon in the right way and prevents it from succumbing to the capacity of the ring, wounds Arachnée mortally, protects it from cheatings from Gollum and ends up carrying it to the Cave of the Destiny. Sam will be even briefly carrying the Ring but contrary to the other carriers, it did not want any to preserve it. It returned it in a little desperate Frodon because the Ring had discovered a greater force as a Sam. Frodon could seize the Ring in time before Sam does not succumb to the capacity of the Single one. The search of Frodon would undoubtedly have shown a failure in the absence of Sam. One can see as a Sam popular wisdom, it does not aspire to glory but to a quiet life in the middle of his garden. For some, its relation with Frodon recalls absolute honesty bringing closer the English officers and their aide-de-camps

Sam leaves the Ground of the Medium in IV 61 after a life filled well and leaves, just like Frodon a few tens of years before, with Tol Eressëa.

Adaptations

In the film adaptation of Peter Jackson, the role of Samsagace Gamegie is held by Sean Astin.

According to Christopher Lee (which incarnates Saroumane in the film adaptation of Peter Jackson), Samsagace Gamegie is the hero of the trilogy. Indeed, of the ordinary hobbit which liked its Comté, it evolves/moves to help Frodon to carry its burden. He becomes somebody able to kill to defend his cause and his friendship with Frodon. He constantly gives his support for Frodon even after his disavowal for the profit of Gollum and is used as parapet in Frodon until the end of the adventure. Lee justifies its words while saying: “For me, it is Sam the hero of the trilogy. It is the ordinary man, who becomes rock in episode 3. ”
