Samosate (of which the name would mean “sun”) was an old city whose ruins are close to the current city of Samsat, province of Adıyaman in Turkey close to the Euphrate.

The city was also called Antioche de Commagène (Greek: Αντιόχεια η Κομμαγηνή). It was the capital of the small kingdom hellenistic of Commagène (of the 3rd century before our era with 72) then left the Roman province of Syria.

Samosate is known like the birthplace of Lucien at the 2nd century after our era, and of Paul de Samosate at the 3rd century.
