Samognat is a common French located in the Département of Ain and the area the Rhone-Alps.
History
One found in Samognat of the tombs dated from the Ier century before J.C but the place was inhabited well before. To the
XIe century, it belongs to the Lords de Thoire. Samognat was mentioned for the first time in
1138. It is in Louchon, in the wood of Samognat, which was found part of the spoils of the Compagnons of Jéhu. Those had tackled the diligence of
Geneva to
Lyon, close to the Lake Sylans, in the night of the 25 to the 26
Ventôse of the An VIII.
Until the
XIXe century, it was a very poor commune very often knowing periods of food shortage. At the end of the
XIXe century, the factory of Charmine which exploited a fall of Oignin was one of the first electric factories of
France.
