Samizdat

Samizdat (in Russian самиздат) was a clandestine system of circulation of writings dissenting in the USSR and in the countries of the Communist bloc, manuscripts or typed by the many members of this abstract network.

The Russian word samizdat would result in Auto-édition (formed of сам, the reflexive pronoun and издательство which means edition). The samizdat is used by derision towards the Gosizdat : official “report writings” of the Soviet mode.

Several poetic reviews circulated in this manner, as well as other poetic works, like the Requiem of Anna Akhmatova, or in prose like extracts of the Accounts of the Kolyma of Varlam Chalamov.

Reproduction and diffusion

The means of reproduction were varied: simple copy of manuscripts with carbon paper, typewriting or even impression with more large scales on clandestine presses.

A dangerous practice

Before the glasnost, the publication by samizdat was repressed. Any apparatus of reproduction (typewriters, photocopiers, presses of printing works), indexed and identified, was checked narrow on behalf of the First department.
