Samare
In Botanical, the samare is a dry Fruit indéhiscent, i.e. a Akène (containing only one Graine), provided with an outgrowth in the shape of membranous wing, formed by the Péricarpe.
The form of the wing, which has as a function to help with the Dissémination fruit, is variable: lengthened at the ash, dissymmetrical at maple, circular wrapping akene at the elm…
This mode of dispersion of seeds, using the air and the Wind, is called the Anémochorie.
One distinguishes:
- the simple samare: it is for example the fruit of the Frêne, of the Orme, the Tulipier of Virginia, the Ailante;
- the double samare or Disamare (which derives from a ovary to two Carpelle S): it is the fruit of the maple S (Acéracée S).
