They are perennial shrubs, lianas or herbaceous plants which have for some of the sheets made up in the shape of palms. As a whole this family is originating in the tropical zones of South America and Central America.

The sheets of species of the kind Carludovica are used for the clothes industry of the famous hats “Panamas”.
