Salyut

Salyut (of Russian Салют , hello or fire of artifices ) is the name of a Soviet series of space stations . The program was composed of eight stations, which were put on orbit during the Années 1970 and 1980.

The first station of the program, Salyut 1, is the first space station built and placed in orbit.

Characteristics

All the Salyut stations were of a relatively simple design and consisted of a single principal module placed orbits about it in only one shooting, by a rocket Proton. The crew and the supply came on board a module Soyuz.

The program in the beginning was indicated like “program DOS 7-K”, where each Salyut station received a single identifier.

Stations

Two generations of Salyut were put into orbit:

First generation

This first generation makes it possible the USSR to make its first steps in the presence of long life in space.

Generation Almaz

Under cover of the Salyut program, the USSR launches a particular model of Salyut to military vocation, being called Almaz (Алмаз, which means French Diamant).

The purpose of it was to supervise the United States and to even be able to carry out operations aiming at destroying satellites using a gun of plane. Salyut 3 made a success of such an operation on a factitious satellite.

Second generation

This second generation of Salyut station was conceived so as to be able to accommodate the cosmonauts much longer than that of the first. Thus Salyut 6 is occupied during 617 days and Salyut 7 during 1  075 days.
