Man of Theater tested, Cammarano is a Dramaturge intelligent and modern, always attentive as well with the need for folding his worms with the music as with the form and the function of the melodrama. With Lucia di Lammermoor , which marks the beginning of its decisive collaboration with Gaetano Donizetti, the poet creates the first accomplished form of the romantic dramma per musica in Italy, proposer are dark and sinister atmospheres, of the violent situations, worrying and morbid psychologies, of the lunar and macabre subjects, the whole on a tight and captivating narrative rate/rhythm.

Its worms, which have a musical quality turned always well and refined, do not concern a popular facility but deploy a full expressive range, with the elegiac colors and leopardienes of the cantabili to the impetuous energy of the cabalettes, solemn gravity of certain scenes choral societies to the dialogs chopped with resonances alfierists, in a continuum polychrome and elegant, always extremely coherent. The poetic fabric cammaranien is moreover rich significant recalls intertextuels (sign of a literary knowledge extraordinarily vast and varied) and the metric forms employed reflect the preoccupation with an extreme artistic and dramaturgic conscience.

Regarded wrongly as unfinished, this last booklet was supplemented by some ajourts Leone Emanuele Bardare (of which the cantabile of the Count, It balen LED suo sorriso , in the third scene of the act II and that of Leonora, Of amor sull' Ali dew , in scene 1 of act IV). These interventions were requested by the type-setter from the origin moreover of the cut of some fragments of worms in the final scene.

The premature disappearance of Cammarano did not allow the continuation of collaboration with Verdi, envisaged under the sign of Shakespeare, with a reduction for the opera of the King Lear .
