Salvation Army

the Salvation Army is, at the origin a founded religious movement in 1865 by William Booth (1829-1912), Pasteur methodist. It is a movement international, present in 111 country, which belongs to the whole of the Christian Churches.

In France, the Salvation Army exerts its actions through the Congregation and of the Foundation. It is member of the Protestant federation of France.

This movement does not have specific doctrines compared to the usual Protestantisme. He insists however on the certainty of a safety offered to all by the Christ and of the possible transformation of any human being by his grace. He is spiritually influenced by the Piétisme, and in the evangelic line of the Christianisme.

Objective

Its mission is to announce the Gospel of Jesus-Christ. She into practice puts her Christian principles in her social action, without discrimination.

History

William Booth founds the Salvation Army in 1865, into full Industrial revolution. At that time, working crowd piles up in the poor districts of East End (in the east of London). Following the example Karl Marx which will find there the bases of its revolutionary ideology, materialist, atheist and based on the principle of the masses, William Booth will propose another means of hello to these populations which live in misery. For him, the social progress, political and economic should rise from a deep interior transformation of the man, reconciled with itself by the power of the Évangile. William Booth, knows however that for speaking with somebody about the biblical promise, it is necessary to be able to propose decent living conditions to him on ground. It is the origin of the currency: " Soup, soap, salvation" (Soup, soap, hello).

Under the impulse of the " Maréchale" Booth (girl of William) and of the Peyron family, in particular Albin father and wire and of White Peyron, the Salvation Army is present in France since 1881, it then creates the Association of French Works of Benevolence of the Salvation Army , recognized public utility in 1931. After having been prohibited under the occupation, the AOFBAS takes again its activity.

Since April 11th, 2000, the Salvation Army France is divided into two; the Foundation Salvation Army and the Congregation Salvation Army.

The Congregation of the Salvation Army, whose currency is " With God, the other, oneself " , carries the values of the Salvation Army. It has today 25 post offices devangelisation in all France and animates a chaplaincy in many establishments of the Foundation.

The Foundation of the Salvation Army, recognized public utility and whose currency is " To help, accompany, rebuild " , account 45 establishments of social action in France. It is entitled to receive legacy and donations and functions for much thanks to the generosity of its givers.

In Swiss, the Salvation Army is present since 1882. It began its activity with the town of Geneva.

A military structure

To gather and put at work the many converts who follow it, William Booth takes as a starting point the military model. Its organization adopts quickly a hierarchy, a discipline, a uniform, payments. Today, the international general headquarter is always based in London. A general there coordinates the action on a world level and fixes the main trends. Since April 2nd, 2006, the general Shaw Clifton exerts this function. Each territory has a national general headquarter. In France, the chief of territory is currently colonel Alain Duchêne.

In France, the Salvation Army is incarnated since April 11th, 2000 in two structures:

  • the Congregation, in charge of the spiritual mission
  • the Foundation, in charge of the social mission

Today, according to its own figures, the Salvation Army is an international structure established in 111 country which gathers 2,5 million members. It intervenes where it can be useful and where it is accepted.
