The Salted River (pima: Onk Akimel English : Salt To rivet Spanish: Rio Salado ) is an affluent of the Gila, length 322 km, in the central Arizona in the the United States.

It is formed in Eastern Arizona by the junction of the rivers Blanche and Noire in the valley between Mogollon Rim and Natanes Plateau.

It passes in the valley between the mountains Mazatzal and of Superstition. Close Fountain Hills it is joined by the Rivière Verde. Approximately five miles below this point, the Stopping of Diversion Reef Granite diverts all remaining water in the channels Arizona and Sud.

From here, the bed of river appears mountains, and races in front of Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, and south of downtown Phoenix. Except for Temple Town Lake, the section of bed of river by the cities is dry, except when torrential rains force upstream larger than normal exits of Stewert Mountain Dam. But of the dangerous sudden risings arrive from time to time in the dry bed of river, particularly during the Mousson.

Onk Akimel O'odham

A tribe of the Pima ( Akimel O' odham , “people of the river”), Onk Akimel O' odham (“people of the Salted River”), lived on banks of the river before the arrival of Spanish explorers.

Their traditional lifestyle ( himdagĭ , sometimes returned in English as “Him-dak”) is always center around the river, than one regards as crowned. Traditionally, the sand of the river banks is used like an agent of exfoliation while bathing (often in torrential rains, particularly during monsoon). Today, majority of the parts of the river that flow by the reserve is dry upstream during the major part of the year because of the stoppings. It was a cause of large anger among the people, particularly the elder ones. However, from time to time monsoon races (although usually very low). In the weeks after December 29th 2004, when abruptly a winter torrential rain much further flooded sectors upstream (in Arizona of north), water to run on the stoppings on such a level that flow at time was higher than any time since the preparations of the Temple Town Lake in 1998, and was a cause for the minor celebration in SRPMIC.
