Salé (rear RTL ''' سلا ''') is a city of the Morocco located at the mouth of the Bouregreg, opposite Rabat.

History

Founded at the 11th century, the city of Salted experienced a true development at the time of the Almohades (12th century) and Mérinides (of the 14th century), because of its strategic position on the terrestrial way Fès/Marrakech, and thanks to its port, centers exchanges between the Europe and the Morocco.

To the 17th century, the arrival of the Moslem repatriates of Spain gave a new breath to the city and created a competition with the city very close to Rabat. The marketing activity of Salé during the 18th century enabled him to extend its influence in the country until in very distant areas. At that time, Salé was famous especially for its intense maritime activity. With the 19th century is announced the end of the commercial role dominating which the city enjoyed, and Salted was locked up on itself and remained, during the 19th century and during the time of the French protectorates and Spanish, a high place of culture and religious life. Currently (2006-2010), the city of Salted will know a great economic advancement thanks to the project of installation of the valley of Bouregreg.

Geography

Salted was always regarded as the rival sister of Reduction, it has a culture and of an identity clean, it is as definitely older as Rabat, the foundation of the city going up, indeed, at the time of the Romains. The Bouregreg wadi separates the capital from Salted. It is composed of several parts:

Downtown area : this animated and over-populated part of the city has as main arteries the boulevards Mohammed V and Hassan II. Some modern shops and stores skirt the downtown area. Two hotels are installed in this part of the city.

Residential districts : this district most beautiful and cleanest of the city of Is salted. Trees skirt the avenues of these residential districts. The residential districts of Salted most famous are, by far, Bettana and Hay Salam, where great number of persons in charge of the city resides, and where there is great number of famous Moroccan characters intellectual.

Seaside : the seaside consists of a cemetery and some modern villas.

Mellah : old Jewish district where an important Jewish community took refuge there about the year 1800. It is one of the most charming Mellah S of Morocco. It follows a ventilated construction standard.

Médina : founded at the beginning of the 12th century by the Almohades, the médina of Salted enorgueillit of fountains, Riads and mosques. Bab Mrisa, close it downtown area makes it possible to penetrate in the Médina.

Policy

Salted is also known to be a stronghold of the movement integrist Islamiste Al Adl Wal Ihssane, the guide spirtuel of the movement resided at it indeed, as well as many disciples and sympathizers. This is helped by the fact that the city knew a very great rural migration these last years. The guide does not reside any more at Salé but at Rabat (Souissi district).
