Salpausselkä
The Salpausselkä , or rather the Salpausselät (the term is generally employed in the plural in Finnois) is a series of Moraine S parallels of the south of the Finland.
The geographers distinguish 3 principal wrinkles. The principal (Salpausselkä I) share of Hanko and the island of Jurmo to cross all Finland towards the east via Lahti and Lappeenranta, until in Russia. Its average altitude compared to the plains is of 20 meters, the maximum being of approximately 70 meters with Lahti. Sometimes altitude is only of some meters, but that is enough to prevent the flow of the rivers towards the Golfe of Finland, except for two breaches (Kymijoki and Vuoksi). It is this relief which gave rise to the area of the lakes which extends to north.
The wrinkle corespond with the terminal moraine of the immense glacier which recovered the area since the last glaciation. The glaciers mark a pause in their withdrawal at the end of the Pléistocène because of a new fall of the temperatures there are 12.700 to 11.500 years, known under the name of Dryas young person. First Salpausselkä is formed towards the end of the period.
Both other Salpausselkä discontinuous, are located a few tens of kilometers more at north (thus more recent), and also correspond to pauses in the retreat of the glaciers.
