Saloum

The Saloum is a river of the Senegal, length 250 km in the natural area of the Sine-Saloum. It throws in the Atlantic Ocean after having formed a delta with the Sine. It sprinkles the town of Kaolack.
History
Saloum was very early coveted with the construction of the fort of Kaolack at the 19th century during the colonial period and of the port later. One can also note the construction of the Noirot bridge to the whole beginning of the 20th century in order to connect two banks of the river to the level of the town of Kaolack.
Economy
Navigation proves very risky because of the stranding and with the wild and extensive salt exploitation undertaken by the Company of Saline of Senegal, the fishing resources strongly decreased forcing the inhabitants of the villages of fishermen like Koundam, Ndagane⦠to turn to other activities.
