Salim (painter)
Salim is a painter Indonesia N who lives in Neuilly (92).
Born on September 3rd, 1908 close to Medan (in current the Northern Sumatra), in what was then the the Indies Dutchwomen, Salim leaves in 1919 for the Netherlands, taken along by a German-Dutch couple which wants to provide education for it. It finishes the college in 1928. It leaves for Paris to study painting with the Academy of the Grande Thatched cottage. From 1929 to 1932, it continues its studies of painting to the Academy Fernand Leger. It becomes acquainted with the nationalist leaders Hatta and Sjahrir in 1929 with Amsterdam. This meeting convinces it of the accuracy of the nationalist cause indonésienne. It returns to the Indies Dutchwomen in 1932 like baby sitter with the family of the brother-in-law of Sjahrir, which has just finished its doctorate in medicine in the Netherlands. From 1932 to 1935, Salim works in the Java Company Neon in Batavia (today Jakarta), while helping Hatta and Sjahrir to manage the educational branch of the party PNI and its review Daoelat Ra' jat (" sovereignty of the peuple").
It goes back to the Netherlands in 1935 after the arrest of Hatta and Sjahrir and their internment to Boven Digoel in New Guinea (current province of Papua) by the Dutch colonial authorities. It returns to Paris in 1936 to carry out the life of painter, often going to the Academy of the Large Thatched cottage. It goes back to the Netherlands in 1939 and takes part in a collective exposure to Amsterdam. One starts to buy his paintings. From 1940 to 1945, Salim takes part in a group of resistant against the occupant Nazi. It makes illustrations for books and gives the money to resistance. It also helps of the Jews to hide. Indonesia proclaims its independence in 1945. The following year, Salim returns to Paris, furious of the policy of the Netherlands which seek to recover their colony. It goes to Sète, where it manages an inn of youth. It is in Sète that it holds its first clean exposure, in 1948. It will then hold of other exposures, in Amsterdam, Paris, Jakarta, Geneva. It obtains medals in various festivals in France.
