History

The name of Salford comes from the Anglo-Saxon Sealhford = " sallow-tree ford" , i.e. “the ford of the willows” in reference to the Saule S (in Latin salix ) which pushed on the banks of the river Irwell which crosses the city. The armorial bearings of the city are thus composed of three blue curved lines (which symbolize the ford on the river) surrounded by sheets of willows.
