Salem is a city of the Tamil Nadu, in the south-east of the India. Of intermediate size (pop 693 236 with the census of 2001), located in the central part of the state, surrounded by hills, it is an important center of textile production. The Steel Authority off India and marks it Salem Steel , installed in the city, are re-elected for the quality of their steel.
Salem is also the capital of the district of Salem (pop 693 236 with the census of 2001), which includes/understands the important cities of Sankagiri, Mettur and Attur. The district is well connected by train and road with the remainder of the state.
Salem is also a stage on the road of the small station of mountain of Yercaud - Tamoul yeri , lake and kadu , forest - less attended than Ooty and Kodaikanal, famous for its plantations of Café, Teck, wood of Santal and orange rs, and its cultures of Poivre and Cardamome.
