Salem (Oregon)

Salem (in English) is the capital of the State of the Oregon, with the the United States, and the seat of the Comté of Marion. In 2003: 142940 people resided in the city, which extends in the center from fertile the Vallée from Willamette, one of the agricultural areas most productive at the world.
The name Salem is derived from the Hebrew word Shalom which means peace. Historically, Salem had as a nickname " Cerise" city; in connection with the cherry festivals which took place there periodically during the 20th century.
History
The Amerindian name of the area was Chemketa , which meant meeting place or of rest . It is preserved through the name of Chemeketa Community College.The first establishment of colonists in the area was the mission Jason Lee in 1840. In 1842 the missionaries established the Institute of Oregon at the place which was going to become the center of Salem. The mission was dissolved in 1844 and the drawn up project of city. One does not know with certainty which chooses the name of the city, people however retained the names of two people: Trustee David Leslie de Salem (of Massachussets) or W.H. Wilson which drew the plans of the city between 1850 and 1851.
In 1851 Salem became the capital of the state (which was Oregon City before), it became it in a permanent way as of 1855 (after Corvallis which was to it the same year). Salem was built-in like city in 1857.
The second capitole of Oregon was built in 1876 on the site of the original. The architectural style of the building was based partly on Capitole of the the United States and accepted its dome in 1893 - but the building undergoes a fire the April 25th 1935, consequently of what a third capitole was built at the same place in 1938.
