Salekhard
Salekhard (in Russian Салехард) is a city of the Federation of Russia, located in the autonomous district of Iamalo-Nenetsie (Oblast de Tioumen). Salekhard is the capital of the autonomous district and is populated by 38 343 inhabitants with the last census of 2005.
Salekhard is located exactly on the Arctic Circle, in the extreme-north of Russia. The city was built on Right Bank of the Ob, with the confluence of the Polouï (Полуй).
The time zone of the city has two hours of shift with that of Moscow.
History
In 1595, Russian colonists according to the projection of Iermak Timofeïevitch in Siberia found a colony called Obdorsk (Обдорск) in the place of a camp khanty (ostiak) named Polnovat-Voj (Полноват-вож). The colony is located close to the river Ob from where its name.The area surrounding Obdorsk was indicated under the name of Krai of Obdorsk or Obdorïa in the interventions of the Tsar S.
The December 10th 1930, Obdorsk becomes the administrative center of the new national district Iamal (Ямальский (Ненецкий) национальныйокруг).
The city is renamed Salekhard in 1933 and obtains the official statute of city in 1938. In 1959 the city counts 16 600 inhabitants, 36 827 in 2002 and 38 343 in 2005.
Economy
Iamalie is most important producing of Natural gas in Russia. The head office of Novatek, the second plus producing natural gas large company is located at Salekhard.The economy of the city also rests on the fishing industries. The port associated with Salekhard is that Novy Port which gives on the Baie of Ob and is located at 270 km in the north of the city.
There is a university with Salekhard.
Salekhard is connected to Vorkouta by the railway line ouralien polar. Joseph Stalin had initiated a project of railway line polar connecting Salekhard to Ienisseï and Igarka but with died of Stalin in 1953 the project is abandoned.
